State Geographic Bee Winners Head to Finals |

The state champions of the 2002 National Geographic Bee were determined in contests across the United States last Friday. The 55 champions, representing every U.S. state and several territories, will gather in Washington, D.C. on May 21 and 22 to determine this year's national Bee championand who gets to win a college scholarship of $25,000. This year five million students from 15,000 schools participated in the preliminary rounds of National Geographic's annual Beetesting their knowledge of the world's geography, economies, politics, cultures and religions. "The importance of the Bee is that it highlights the importance of geographyespecially in today's climateand that the leaders of tomorrow know their stuff," says Mary Lee Elden, director of the National Geographic Bee. Alex Trebek, host of the popular quiz show Jeopardy will moderate the national competition which will air nationally the same day on the National Geographic Channel and will be shown later on public television stations.
