The Cuban rock iguana—such as this one at the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in May 2008—thrives inside the naval station. Often eaten in Cuba's protein-poor communities, the iguana is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species.

The iguana is one of many rare animals protected by the base's razor-wire fences, experts say.
