Photo: Panama Canal Expansion Spurs Environmental Debate



The 50-mile (82-kilometer) Panama Canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans is currently too small to handle the world's largest class of modern freighters.

An ambitious new expansion—slated for completion in 2014, the canal's centennial—will add a third shipping lane to handle such behemoths.
