Photo: Hawaii Islands Named World's Largest Marine Sanctuary

Midway Atoll, seen here in 2002, is just one of the islands, atolls, and coral reefs that make up the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, an archipelago extending some 1,200 miles (1,930 kilometers) in the Pacific Ocean.

Today U.S. President George W. Bush designated the Nortwestern Hawaiian Islands a national monument, creating the largest marine reserve in the world.
