Photo: Lions Making a Comeback on Kenya Ranches



A lion basks near Mount Kilimanjaro in southern Kenya. Lions here are often speared as part of a manhood ritual and poisoned to prevent livestock predation. But a new conservation program on communally owned ranches has found success in protecting the big cats, by compensating herders for lost livestock and enlisting local Maasai warriors as "lion guardians."
