Photo: Museum Secrets Unmasked by "Museomics" Technologies

Mammoth hair, above, that had been sitting in a Russian museum for 200 years helped scientists reconstruct the beast's genome, a study announced in November 2008.

The practice of digging new information out of old collections has been called "museomics."
