Photo: Volcano Erupts in Chile; Spews Ash 12 Miles Up



Chile's Chaitén volcano erupts on May 2, 2008, after 9,000 years of slumber. On May ash clouds were reported to have reached as high as 12 miles (19 kilometers). Thousands of area residents have been evacuated.
