Photo: New Biological "Machines" Fight Disease, Produce Power

The Slovenian team celebrates its win at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition.

Held November 8 and 9, 2008, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, iGEM drew 84 largely undergraduate teams from 21 nations to showcase the power of human-engineered biological "machines."

Slovenia won by developing two vaccines against Helicobacter pylori, a harmful bacteria that can cause ulcers.
