Miami Marine Stadium

Miami, Florida

The first U.S. venue built for watching powerboat racing, the circa-1960s Miami Marine Stadium has fallen into disrepair, and some have called for its demolition. Preservationists have led the fight to repurpose the stadium, which is one of nine U.S. landmarks on the WMF's 2010 World Monuments Watch List.

"It's in concrete and modern, and people look at it sideways and think, What's so historic about that?" WMF's Avrami said.

"Indeed," she said, "it was a groundbreaker in terms of its design and the kinds of events and the things that happened there."
