Fifth Place (Tie): Kakadu National Park, Australia

A national park half the size of Switzerland, Kakadu--in Australia's Northern Territory--is jointly managed by government officials and Aboriginal people.

The landscape's rocky hills and river valleys are "cleverly managed, unspoiled, beautiful," said a judge for the 2009 "Destinations Rated" scorecard. Above, clouds cast shadows over the East Alligator River floodplains in an undated picture.

"A wealth of information is available at visitor centers around the area, and park personnel promote the environmental message at every opportunity," according to one panelist.
