Third Place: Irresistible Photoresist

Photoresist, a light-sensitive material used in industrial processes, "just looks pretty" magnified 200 times in the above picture, photographer Pedro Barrios-Perez said in a statement.

Barrios-Perez, of the Institute for Microstructural Sciences at the National Research Council of Canada, won third place in the 2009 Small World Photomicrography Competition.

The wrinkled photoresist, he said, "looks like the sun warming up the Earth with its mighty energy waves."
