September 2, 2009--The European Southern Observatory in Chile recently captured this picture of the galaxy NGC 4945. Although the galaxy looks like a cigar here, astronomers have spotted a few tell-tale signatures that suggest it's actually a spiral galaxy, just like our Milky Way—from Earth, we probably see the galaxy edge-on.

Bright pink bands show regions of star formation in the galaxy, and jets of high-energy radiation coming from its center likely mean that NGC 4945 harbors an active supermassive black hole at its heart.
