Berlin, Germany, September 2, 2009--A thousand icy "humans" melt on the steps of a music hall at midday. Arranged by the German arm of the global conservation group WWF, the spectacle was meant to call attention to the effects of global warming in the Arctic.

Scientists announced September 3 that the Arctic is now the warmest it's been in 2,000 years.
