Torshavn, Faroe Islands, August 13, 2009--A worker mows grass growing on a government building's "green" roof in the capital city of the Faroe Islands, a self-governing part of Denmark since the 1940s.

Sitting in the cold North Atlantic about halfway between Iceland and Norway, the Faroe archipelago includes 17 inhabited islands and a handful of unpeopled islets. The current population is largely descended from Vikings who settled the rugged, rocky terrain in the ninth century, according to the CIA World Factbook.
