July 6, 2009--Driver Paolo Bellutta measures how far a mock version of the Mars rover Spirit moved after the craft was told to go forward through sand at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

Mission managers built the "sandbox" as part of their search for ways to free the real rover, which has been trapped in a patch of soft Martian soil since early May.
