July 1, 2009--A new atlas of the Milky Way's inner regions shows glowing ribbons and expanding bubbles of gas peppered with thousands of dense knots of cold dust--the future birthplaces of stars.

The 16,000-pixel-long map, created using the ESO-operated APEX telescope, will help astronomers better understand star birth and the structure of the crowded galactic core.
