Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, Iran

Two canals on the River Kârun once provided water to the Iranian city of Shushtar via a series of tunnels that send water cascading down a cliff to a mill (pictured in an undated photograph).

The ancient system, which first saw use in the 5th century B.C. under Persian king Darius the Great, was added to the UN World Heritage List as a cultural treasure in June 2009.

"The property has an ensemble of remarkable sites," World Heritage officials wrote.
