First Tubular Steel Roller Coaster

Disneyland's Matterhorn Bobsleds ride in Anaheim, California, launched a new era when it opened in 1959 as the first roller coaster designed with a tubular steel track.

"That design enabled designers to start to push the limits for the future," ultimaterollercoaster.com's Eric Gieszl said. The use of tubular steel later enabled "the invention of [repeated] vertical loops and other elements we now see in all types of coasters."
