Tarzi's team excavates Bamiyan's Great Stupa, a Buddhist place of worship, in 2006. His assistants include local residents, some of whom he's training in basic excavation and preservation.

"My excavations are part of a scientific program that benefits everyone," Tarzi said in spring 2009. "The local inhabitants who work on the site every year otherwise are unemployed. In two months of work they are able to go through winter and provide for their families."

Locals also deter looters.
