Mount Taylor, New Mexico

Many Native American tribes view Mount Taylor, in the southwestern corner of New Mexico's San Mateo Mountains, as a sacred place.

Proposed uranium mining among the roughly 12,000-foot-tall (3,600-meter-tall) peaks may compromise the spiritual site, prompting the National Trust for Historic Preservation to place the mountain on its 2009 list of the 11 most endangered historic places in the United States.
