Human Services Center, Yankton, South Dakota

Founded in 1879 as the South Dakota Hospital for the Insane (pictured circa 1907), the Human Services Center campus includes neoclassical, art deco, and Italiante buildings--all of them now vacant.

The state plans to raze 11 of the historic buildings--earning the center a spot on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's 2009 list of the 11 most endangered historic places in the United States.
