A dead horse that was trapped by the Australian wildfires lies on the roadside near the town of Kinglake on February 9, 2009.

Among the fire's other victims are thousands of kangaroos, koalas, cattle, and sheep, according the AFP news agency.

"It's been absolutely devastating," Pat O'Brien, president of the Wildlife Protection Association of Australia told the AFP. "By all reports, we've got animals dying even before the flames reach them."
