Chaiten, Chile, January 19, 2009--A false-color satellite image shows the effects of a collapsed dome at the summit of the Chaiten volcano. A reinvigorated plume showers ash (brown) onto the Patagonian landscape, the vegetation of which is rendered in red.

Dormant for more than 9,000 years, the volcano rumbled back to life in May 2008 in electrifying fashion (photo of the volcano's ash cloud spiked with lightning bolts). On January 29 Chile announced it will relocate the village of Chaiten. The 5,000-strong town has been largely destroyed by floods and ash from the volcano, which shows no signs of resuming its slumber.
