Ninth Prize: Natural Beauty

The rainbow hues of many winning BioScapes' photos come from microscope "tricks." But the colors in this 40 X picture of a jewel beetle are all natural.

Photographer Charles Krebs of Washington State zoomed in on the beetle's eye region because "it illustrates how effective these complex cuticle structures are at selectively reflecting specific frequencies of light in particular directions," he said in a statement.
