Eighth Prize: Pop-Up Parasite

Magnified 600 times and photographed using a technique that records patterns of interference between multiple beams of light, a Trichodina pediculus parasite appears starkly, sharply three-dimensional in this image by Germany's Gerd Gunther.

The parasite normally lives on another tiny freshwater animal, the hydra, which attaches to underwater plants and uses its many tentacles to lasso food.
