October 31, 2008--This ultraviolet image reveals a galaxy that has come back from the dead.

The Ghost of Mirach galaxy was thought to have few newly-forming starsbut UV images like this one reveal a ring of young, hot stars.

The ring likely was formed during a collision with a nearby galaxy 900 million years ago. The event suggests that old, lenticular galaxies can take new life from the raw materials of small surrounding galaxies.

The data come from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer telescope, a NASA mission led by Caltech scientists.
