Los Angeles, October 13, 2008--Residents flee a newly hellish landscape in California's San Fernando Valley during a fast-moving brush fire.

Howling Santa Ana winds fanned the flames of several southern California wildfires this week. The blazes torched buildings, closed a vital freeway, and caused at least two fatalities--prompting Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to declare a state of emergency in L.A. and Ventura Counties.
