Guatemala City, Guatemala, October 7, 2008--An indigenous woman participates in the opening ceremony of the Third Americas Social Forum, which runs through Sunday.

The annual event focuses on the rights of indigenous people. Topics slated for discussion among the 6,000 participants include defense of land, the food crisis, exploitation of natural resources, and U.S. free trade treaties, according to Prensa Latina.

Bolivia's controversial indigenous president Evo Morales, who recently booted the U.S. ambassador from his country, is expected to attend.
