Karbala, Iraq, September 22, 2008--A Shiite Muslim kisses the door at the entrance to the Imam Hussein shrine, as part of remembrances for Imam Ali.

Imam Ali was the son-in-law and cousin of the Prophet Muhammad. Shiites considered him the prophet's true successor. He was stabbed in the southern Iraqi town of Kufa in A.D. 661 with a poison-coated knife and died three days later.

The Agence France-Presse reported heightened security in and around Kufa to protect Shiite pilgrims.
