Sheffield, United Kingdom, August 24, 2008--The Tinsley Towers, Sheffield's beloved salt and pepper pots, come crashing to Earth in the wee hours of August 24.

The 250-foot-tall (76-meter-tall) cooling towers stood by the M1 highway as a landmark for millions of motorists. When they finally fell, thousands turned out to watch.

Preservation campaigns decried the demolition as cultural vandalism.

But the towers' owner, Germany-based energy company E.ON, said the structures had deteriorated and were prohibitively expensive to maintain.
