WEEK IN PHOTOS: Galactic ''Tentacles,'' Palace Fire, More

August 20, 2008--Red tentacles of gas appear to stream from the galaxy NGC 1275 in a recently released Hubble Space Telescope image.

The lacy filaments have long puzzled scientists, because they are relatively cool, contrasted with the surrounding gases, which are about 70 million degrees Fahrenheit (40 million degrees Celsius).

But a paper published on Thursday suggests that the streamers are held together by weak magnetic fields that protect the filaments from collapsing or evaporating (read the full story).
