Marine species unique to Brazil—including soft coral, mollusks, and fish—find shelter in the Abrolhos Bank, home to the M. caverosa corals seen above.

At the International Coral Reef Symposium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in early July 2008, scientists from Brazil's Federal University of Espirito Santo, the Federal University of Bahia, and Conversation International Brazil announced that the Abrolhos Bank reef system is nearly twice as vast as previously estimated.
