Brockworth, United Kingdom, May 26, 2008— On a nearly vertical, rain-slicked incline, intrepid Britons chase victory—and a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese (lower right)—at Gloucestershire, England's annual Cheese Rolling.

The race, which may have begun as a pagan ceremony, is said to date back at least 200 years. Thousands attend the series of races, and their sole rewards are the chase-inspiring cheeses.
