Dakar, Senegal, May 21, 2008—A crowd gathers around a beached whale near Dakar's Yoff neighborhood. The whale was among more than 80 that swam ashore Tuesday night, the Associated Press reported.

About 60 of the animals, including the one above, were successfully towed back to sea, but the beach was strewn with more than 20 carcasses by Wednesday afternoon.

Although the species has not been confirmed, the animals appear to be pilot whales, conservationists said. Experts are not sure why the whales came ashore.
