More than 50,000 people died and about 30,000 are missing after the magnitude 8 temblor.

The Chinese government has requested local authorities to build more than a million temporary homes that provide minimum living space for the quake victims, the Chinese state media reported.

In Sichuan—the earthquake's epicenter—more than 2.9 million houses have been destroyed, according to Chinese media reports.
