Futaleufú, Chile, May 11, 2008—Ash falls on a home in the village of Futaleufú as the nearby Chaitén volcano continues to spew smoke and debris.

The volcano, which rumbled to life May 2, sent up a lightning-laced column of hot debris 20 miles (32 kilometers) high (photos of the volcano). The ash cloud is being kept aloft by continuing eruptions, Reuters reports.

Small collapses send material raining down on local villages, but experts fear that a full collapse could smother towns for hundreds of miles.
