Primary school students in northwest China's Gansu Province squat under their desks during an earthquake that devastated much of neighboring Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008.

At least 48 people in Gansu died in the magnitude 7.8 quake, and 20,000 have been evacuated.

"Stampede accidents have been reported in some schools in Longnan," Zhang Lixin, a press official of Longnan City of Gansu, told the state-run news agency Xinhua.
