Mount Gerizem, West Bank, April 19, 2008Samaritans gather around fire pits as sacrificed sheep smolder during a ritual of Passover, the annual Jewish holiday marking the liberation of Hebrews from slavery in ancient Egypt.

Men had wrestled dozens of animals to the ground and slit their throats. After cooking in the pits, the meat was eaten and the remains incinerated.

The 700-strong Samaritans trace their ancestry to the ancient kingdom of Samaria. Half live at Mount Gerizim and half in a Tel Aviv suburb.
