The solemn occasion marked Hungarian Holocaust Daythe anniversary of the date when members of Hungary's ruling Nazi party shot Jews into the Danube at this location in 1944.

Hungary was an official ally of the Axis powers during World War II and shipped hundreds of thousands of Jews to their eventual deaths during the fighting. The country fell to the Soviet Army in 1945 during its drive to Berlin.
