World Press Photo Contest 2007

British photographer Tim Hetherington's picture for Vanity Fair of a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan was named the top news photo of 2007 on February 8, 2008, by the World Press Photo organization. Shown on September 16, 2007, the man collapses in a bunker in a region that has seen intense warfare.

"This image shows the exhaustion of a manand the exhaustion of a nation," said jury chairman Gary Knight in a statement. "We're all connected to this. It's a picture of a man at the end of a line."

Choosing from the work of 5,019 photographers, judges also selected winners in ten subject areasfrom spot news to sports featuresand awarded first, second, and third prizes for both singles (photos published individually) and stories (photo-essays).
