Karachi, Pakistan, February 19, 2008A man fires a shot of celebration into the air upon hearing early returns from Pakistan's general election.

The country's two main opposition parties dealt a stiff blow to President Pervez Musharraf, putting the parliament largely in the hands of the Pakistan Muslim League and the Pakistan People's Partythe party of slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

After the election, Nawaz Sharif, head of the Muslim League, called on Musharraf to step aside, but the president responded that he had no plans to resign.
