Egypt Turns Desert Into Farmland

A shepherd tends his sheep in Abu Minqar, a remote desert farm village in Egypt.

Home to about 4,000 people, the village is an example of Egypt's ambitious and controversial plan to turn its deserts into farmlands.

''This is one of the most isolated communities—by distance and by desert—in Egypt,'' said Richard Tutwiler, director of the Desert Development Center.
