Ponorogo, Indonesia, December 27, 2007—Villagers wade through waist-high water in East Java, one of several provinces in western Indonesia battered by days of torrential downpours that collapsed hillsides and sent mudslides ripping through towns.

Rescuers dug through the wreckage—sometimes with their bare hands—in search of survivors. But at least 78 people have been killed or are feared dead, according to the Associated Press.

The aid workers' task has been made even more difficult by blocked roads and continuing rains that have sent thousands fleeing from their homes.
