Bhutto and at least a dozen others were killed by a combined gunfire and bomb attack at a campaign rally in Rawalpindi, near the capital city of Islamabad (see map).

Twice elected the nation's prime minister, in 1988 and 1993, Bhutto was the first female leader of an Islamic state in modern times.

After nearly a decade of self-imposed exile in Dubai and London, she returned to Pakistan in October to lead the opposition against the current president, Pervez Musharraf.

Bhutto was the daughter of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was executed in 1979, also in Rawalpindi.
