Nizhny Zaramag, Russia, December 16, 2007—Safety workers shoot howitzer artillery at a mountainside in the hopes of triggering an avalanche in the border area between Russia and Georgia.

Mountain roads throughout the Caucasus Mountains are often difficult to travel during winter because of snow.

The avalanches are triggered to reduce the danger of naturally occurring slides.
