The spaceport is being developed by private firm Space Adventures one of the leading players in commercializing space travel.

"Suborbital flights will offer millions of people the opportunity to experience the greatest adventure available: space travel," Space Adventures president and CEO Eric Anderson told the news agency AFP in 2005.

Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic is developing a similar spaceport in New Mexico.
