Banff Mountain Photo Competition

Stinging snow and below-freezing temperatures on Oregon's Iron Mountain couldn't stop local photographer Marc Adamus, who snapped this 20-story-tall pinnacle—a remnant of the peak's volcanic core.

Eighteen winning pictures—a selection of which are shown here—were named on September 13, 2007, at Canada's Banff Mountain Centre. The competition was presented in part by the National Geographic Society. (National Geographic News is part of the National Geographic Society.)
