Snowstorm in El Alto, Bolivia

Children play after a rare storm blanketed the city of El Alto with 8 inches (20 centimeters) of snow on July 9, 2007.

The snow caused two fatal traffic accidents, sporadic blackouts, and the closing of the international airport, which lies on the outskirts of Bolivia's administrative capital of La Paz.

An unusually cold Southern Hemisphere winter in South America brought blizzards and rare snowfalls to normally temperate locales such as Argentina, where temperatures dropped to minus 7.6 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 22 degrees Celsius).
