Sydney, Australia, July 20, 2007—This meerkat's manor at the Taronga Zoo was in need of some space heaters last Friday as a cold snap blasted Sydney, bringing the city its coldest day in 21 years.

Temperatures dropped to a chilly 30.9°F (-0.6°C) at night, prompting zoo officials to bring out infrared heat lamps for its meerkats, desert dwellers that are more attuned to the heat of an African savanna.

Even though it is winter in Australia, icy winds from the Southern Ocean brought Sydney last week's record cold. But a new wind is blowing over the city this week, bringing warmer air and upping temperatures to an unusual 73.4°F (23°C).
