"Disastrous" Conditions at Taiwan Zoo

A hippopotamus mother nudges her dead baby at Taiwan's Shoushan Zoo in 2003.

Members of the animal-welfare group EAST discovered the baby hippo lying unnoticed at the bottom of a pool.

Zoo workers, who had not realized the mother hippopotamus was pregnant, immediately drained the water.

Water marks on the logs show the previous depth of the pool.
